President Donald Trump of the United States reaffirmed a tough stance on future tariff policy by setting 10% as the 'de facto minimum threshold' for the basic rates of reciprocal tariffs by country.
On the 11th (local time), aboard Air Force One heading to Florida, President Trump met with reporters and said, “The basic principle of reciprocal tariffs by country is 10%, which is the minimum standard,” adding, “Exceptions may be possible in especially clear circumstances, but I want to see 10% as the bottom line.”
Earlier, the Trump administration announced reciprocal tariffs of over 10% from the 4th, and from the 9th, applied high tariffs exceeding 10% to some countries with serious trade deficits. Other countries, except China, were given a 90-day grace period and entered into negotiations.
President Trump also suggested a possibility of communication with China's President Xi Jinping, expecting “positive results” in relations with China.
Meanwhile, emphasizing trust in the Dollar, he stated, “The Dollar is the key currency and will continue to be so,” and expressed confidence, “If we understand the nature of what we are doing, the value of the Dollar will become stronger.” Regarding the bond market, which recently caused market unrest, he mentioned, “There was a temporary problem, but I resolved it quickly.”
On this day, President Trump underwent his first routine medical check-up since being re-elected, and directly reported, “Overall, my health is good, and I got all the answers right on the cognitive ability test.” The results of the medical examination are scheduled to be released on the 13th.
