Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) mentioned the spread of digital currencies as a fact and emphasized that the future task is risk management. In a recent interview with foreign media, she stated, “The digital currency era has already arrived. Now, the real issue depends on how to control the risks associated with it.”
This statement came at a time when digital assets such as central bank digital currencies (CBDC) and privately issued stablecoins are securing substantial positions in the traditional financial markets. The IMF is also repeatedly emphasizing the advantages and disadvantages of digital currencies and the need for international consultations on governance through recent reports.
Managing Director Georgieva suggested, “Technology is accelerating financial innovation, but the sophistication of regulation and international cooperation are becoming crucial,” indicating the necessity of a global risk integrated management system.
