After President Donald Trump announced a 90-day deferral of reciprocal tariffs targeting over 70 countries, Jamison Greer, USTR representative, directly stated the government's position on this.

Representative Greer explained that "There are many countries saying they will cooperate without retaliating, looking for a path forward," and President Trump is seeking negotiation measures with such countries. He added, “The President is leaving open the possibility for negotiation, and substantive talks may begin in the coming weeks or months.”

Regarding China, Greer stated, “They have chosen retaliation and uncertainty for years,” evaluating that while the U.S. keeps the door open for dialogue, China is not ready to respond to that.

Some Democratic lawmakers pointed out procedural issues regarding the sudden tariff deferral announcement made during the hearing, while Greer explained on site, “I was informed about the decision made by the White House just a few minutes ago.”

Regarding why some countries like North Korea and Russia were excluded from the deferral, he explained that “They are already classified as exceptions as strong sanctions and embargoes are in place.”

Amidst the discourse surrounding the Trump administration's tariff policy, the Republican Party emphasized its domestic industry protection effects, while the Democratic Party expressed concerns about measures targeting allies. Among them, Representative Greer is increasingly noted as a key figure in designing the future direction of U.S. trade policy.
