It has been reported that the United States requested a direct call between the two countries' leaders to China.

On the 10th (local time), CNN reported, citing multiple government sources, that “the US government asked China to propose a phone meeting between President Xi Jinping and President Donald Trump.”

This proposal is interpreted as a diplomatic move to ease the recently heightened tariff war and trade conflicts. President Trump previously announced a 90-day suspension of mutual tariffs on countries other than China, but strong tariffs on China are still maintained. Accordingly, the need for high-level communication to normalize relations between the two countries is increasing.

CNN analyzed, “If this call is successful, it could be an important turning point in easing trade tensions between the two countries.” In particular, as concerns about the side effects of tariff policy are growing in the US political and financial sectors, it is interpreted that President Trump is also seeking some diplomatic flexibility.

Meanwhile, China has not yet made an official statement on the request. However, President Trump has previously left open the possibility of dialogue with China, saying, “Many countries are negotiating,” so there is keen interest in whether the call will actually be successful.
