The bitcoin held by companies worldwide has exceeded 688,000. This is an increase of 16.11% from the previous quarter, meaning that companies have secured about 3.28% of the total bitcoin supply (21 million). Cryptocurrency investment firm Bitwise released data related to this, and by the end of the first quarter, the value of companies' bitcoin holdings reached 57 billion dollars (about 76 trillion won).
Since the beginning of the year, the movement of companies investing in cryptocurrencies has become more noticeable. In the first quarter alone, 12 listed companies newly started purchasing bitcoin, and among the existing holding companies, Strategy secured the largest amount of bitcoin, establishing a leading position. This company additionally purchased about 285 million dollars worth of bitcoin last Monday, and currently holds over 531,000 bitcoins in total.
Game distribution company Gamestop also recently adopted bitcoin as a financial asset, attracting attention in the market. The first purchase made at the end of March is expected to be around 1.3 billion dollars, and it has been reported that funds were raised in a manner similar to Strategy using bonds. Japanese listed company Metaplanet also announced plans to purchase 10,000 bitcoins within the year, showing proactive movement.
Hunter Horsley, CEO of Bitwise, stated, “This year will be a turning point for companies to fully embrace bitcoin,” adding, “In the first quarter alone, companies purchased 95,000 bitcoins.” Additionally, with the revision of the new accounting standards in the U.S., under the FASB regulations, companies will be able to evaluate cryptocurrencies held at fair value, which is expected to further increase corporate-level bitcoin demand.
The trend of viewing cryptocurrencies as strategic assets rather than short-term investment targets is gradually strengthening, and the holding movements of major companies are leading to a shift in overall market perception.
