Vitalik Buterin, Co-founder of Ethereum, unveiled major changes related to security enhancements of Layer-2 (L2) technology and presented a blueprint for the future expansion direction of the Ethereum ecosystem. This came ahead of the 'Pectra' upgrade scheduled for May 7, predicting advancements in both performance and security.

Buterin recently explained in his blog the security stages of L2 rollup technology as Stage 0, Stage 1, and Stage 2. In Stage 0, the security committee has strong authority to intervene in the network by a simple majority vote. In Stage 1, intervention is possible only with the agreement of at least 6 out of 8 members, and in Stage 2, intervention is limited only when a verifiable bug is found.

Buterin mathematically analyzed the risks of failure for the security committee at each stage, particularly the risk of 'inoperability' and 'security failure,' and also presented a model for determining the timing of transition to Stage 2. He also proposed the introduction of an independent multisig-based security structure in the initial application of Stage 2, mentioning countermeasures against potential conflicts in duplicate proof systems between various rollups.

Meanwhile, the Ethereum community anticipates that the Pectra upgrade will double the actual processing capacity of the L2 network. This upgrade is designed to enhance user wallet accessibility and staking efficiency, and despite several technical challenges, developers have rapidly resolved issues and the mainnet application is imminent.

Buterin predicted that this upgrade would positively impact not only the user experience of Ethereum but also the overall ecosystem expansion. With the security system of the L2 protocol becoming more sophisticated, investors are focusing on whether Ethereum can establish itself as a platform with both processing speed and security.
