Coinbase Strengthening Lobby Against Trump Administration (Source: CNBC)
It has become known that Coinbase, the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the United States, sponsored a parade commemorating the 250th anniversary of the founding of the U.S. Army, leading to growing criticism within the cryptocurrency industry.
According to DL News, Coinbase's logo and promotional text were displayed at the event, and although the exact scale of the sponsorship was not revealed, the industry views this as a political gesture beyond a simple marketing level. Some experts point out, "The fact that Coinbase funded a government event is in conflict with the core spirit of cryptocurrency, which is decentralization and independence from the government."
In relation to this, Coinbase has also caused controversy in the past with political sponsorships. In particular, the precedent of donating 1 million dollars to Trump's presidential inauguration committee is being revisited. Some in the industry interpret this sponsorship of the parade as an attempt to strengthen ties with the current administration beyond merely enhancing its image.
Given that the cryptocurrency industry has fundamentally aimed for an ecosystem free from state power, there are concerns that such actions might undermine user and investor trust. Coinbase has not yet released an official statement.
